Continuing Education Ideas

The following is a compendium of ideas that our members have found to be useful and effective for their Stephen Ministry program

Topic or idea: Contact

Do a book review of a book that addresses a topic that seems prevalent amongst several caregivers. For example, if several care receivers are having spousal problems, group wise review a book during the continuing education session addressing that topic. Currently we are reviewing "Caring Criticism" by William Diehm available from Stephen Ministry, St. Louis.

The review is done chapter by chapter by a leader or a Stephen Minister (SM). Each SM has their own book and we assign a chapter for reading and then discussion at the next meeting. A simple way to promote discussion is to have the SM underline the most important sentence in each paragraph. Then we go around the room soliciting comments on why they underlined what they selected. There is no right or wrong answer, of course and we find we get lively discussions at times. Each week a different person as as the discussion leader.

This process gets everyone involved, we can include those SM who are less involved, and it brings, is easy to prepare for, and addresses issues common to many in the room.

Don't forget the contents in the "35 pound box" - the materials we got at Leaders training.
Looking for outside speakers and including them in continuing education can add interest and a diverse view of a topic. Many organizations can provide a speaker for little cost. Consider inviting yourself to another presentation for that speaker, if you have doubts about the effectiveness of the speaker.

Consider re-teaching selected topics from the training topics you used to train your SM. Do this 6 to 9 months after initial training. Now that many of the SM have a care receiver, they will identify more closely with the material being presented.

We have found the details of the Facilitator's duties are important to re-visit several times. This will keep the supervision session on track.
